Learning It a Second Time

It is impossible to learn in advance everything you will need in life. Some professions do not exist yet, some technologies will disappear, and much of what you studied will be forgotten exactly by the moment it is suddenly required.

In the 1880s Hermann Ebbinghaus ran his experiments mainly on himself. He memorised nonsense syllables, waited, and then checked how much effort relearning them took. That produced one of the first quantitative maps of forgetting — and an important observation: relearning goes faster even when the material feels gone.

Later Henry Roediger and Jeffrey Karpicke showed that trying to retrieve material from memory can strengthen long-term retention better than extra rereading. Over a short interval rereading felt more pleasant and gave confidence. Over a longer one the unprompted test won. Memory likes not only input but also practice at output.

So what matters is less remembering the material than being able to rebuild it: working out what exactly is missing, finding reliable sources, separating basic concepts from details, connecting the new to what you already know, testing your understanding on a problem, and returning to the topic after a break.

A good education does not make a person omniscient. Usually it produces a less pleasant effect: the size of the unknown becomes visible. Before you study a subject, it all looks fairly simple. After a few years it turns out that even specialists argue about terms, methods and the limits of applicability.

This is not a loss of confidence but an increase in the resolution of the picture.

The skill of learning also develops with practice. Someone used to reading difficult texts holds an argument in mind for longer. Someone who solves problems regularly spots a familiar structure faster. Someone constantly switching between short fragments of information may find that a long thought has started to feel like a technical fault.

The brain is not a muscle in the literal sense, but it adapts to actions performed often. We get better at what we do regularly — including getting distracted, putting things off, and finding a reason to open one more tab.

Which leads to a rather dull conclusion: how you learn cannot be fully separated from how an ordinary day goes.

The effect shows up in any abandoned skill. Someone who studied German at school and has not opened a textbook for twenty years honestly believes he remembers nothing. A month of lessons later he is where a complete beginner arrives after six months: word order feels familiar, the article falls into place without explanation, and an unfamiliar word is recognised as unfamiliar. The knowledge did not vanish — it stopped being retrievable, which from the outside looks the same.

Hence a conclusion that is hard to accept: keeping a subject alive in memory for years is usually more expensive than getting it back in two weeks. Storage costs more than restoration — provided you know how to restore.
