When words no longer fit
Sometimes the other person is not listening.
He waits for a pause to reply, repeats the accusation, rejects every clarification and uses each of your lines as fresh material against you.
Continuing the conversation at that point usually strengthens the conflict. The person formulates more and more arguments for his own rightness, and emotional arousal binds them into a durable story.
It is worth stating your position clearly once:
I do not agree with this accusation.
Here is what happened from my point of view.
I am ready to return to the conversation when we can discuss facts without shouting.
After that you can stop.
Silence is not an admission. Leaving does not prove guilt. But the way you leave matters. A demonstrative disappearance can escalate the conflict when it was safe to name a pause instead.
With direct aggression, a threat, or where a normal conversation is impossible, no explanations are required. Safety outranks the quality of the closing line.
It is especially useless to answer questions built as traps:
Why do you always ruin everything?
When will you finally stop lying?
They already contain the conclusion, which you are invited to accept as the condition for answering.
You can bring the conversation back to a checkable episode:
Name the specific situation you want to discuss.
If the person is not willing, there is no conversation yet. There is only an emotional attack in the form of a question.
Not every opinion about us needs correcting. Reputation matters, but endless self-defence in front of someone who has decided not to believe hands him too much power over your time.
Sometimes the last substantive line is a door closed without a slam.
The sign of a dead end is the repetition counter. If the same explanation is being said for the third time and comes back each time as a new accusation, the exchange of information ended long ago. A fourth attempt will add nothing: the other person is not short of facts, he is busy with something else. Every new argument here works as raw material: it is taken apart not for its truth but for its usefulness in the next accusation. A refuted point does not disappear, it simply comes back two laps later in a new wording.
Stopping at that moment looks like a defeat and usually is not one. The one who loses is more likely the person giving up his evenings to change the mind of someone who has no procedure for changing it.
