Curiosity with a screwdriver

The world gets clearer once things stop being black boxes.

Why does a fridge move heat outwards while staying cold inside? How does water get to the top floor? Why does a bridge expand in summer? What happens after you press “send”? Why does one company make money on a free product while another goes bust on a paid one?

Behind most everyday things sit long chains of inventions, mistakes and compromises. A modern object often looks obvious only because the earlier failed versions were removed from the room long ago.

Curiosity is best paired with action: take apart an old mechanism that is safe to open, build a simple model, change one parameter and look at the result, reproduce an experiment, read the history of an invention, talk to someone who works with the system every day.

An experiment differs from aimless meddling by having a question and a way to check the answer.

This matters most where mistakes are expensive. Not every device benefits from an inquisitive owner with a screwdriver. The distribution board, the gas line and a car’s brakes would all prefer the research phase to start with the documentation.

The point of curiosity is not necessarily to learn to fix everything yourself. It is enough to stop treating the workings of the world as a form of magic.

The most useful things to take apart are the ones you pay for regularly. A heating bill looks like a verdict from nature until you find out that the building has one shared meter and the consumption is split by floor area. After that it is clear that a neighbour’s window left open in January is paid for by everyone, and the conversation in the building chat stops being a complaint about the management company and turns into a question about the metering scheme.

A thing taken apart rarely saves money straight away. It gives you a list of the places where decisions are actually made, and a sense of who is worth asking. Usually that is enough to stop arguing with people who don’t decide anything.
